Once you have a solid foundation of how to play rimworld you can use mods to make the interface more friendly and of course deepen the game. Personally the reason why i dont always use the larger maps its because i dont feel like its needed i had a 30 member colony in a normal size map and there was still plenty of the map remaining.
I find the map size in this game to be too damn small. I wanna go explore huge tracts of land that might take me a real time week to circle navigate.
